Marine Conservation Win: Entangled Hawksbill Sea Turtle Freed Near Globalport Davao

On September 04, 2025, at around 1005H, a Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), a critically endangered species, was discovered trapped and entangled in a cargo net in the seawater adjacent to Berth 4, Globalport Terminal Davao, Km. 10, Sasa, Davao City, during a routine inspection of the port premises.

The incident was immediately reported by Mr. Frede Pabalate, Pollution Control and Safety Officer of Globalport Davao Terminal, to the Philippine Coast Guard – Marine Environmental Protection Unit (PCG-MEPU).

At 1026H, the PCG-MEPU team arrived on site, and by 1040H, their divers successfully freed the turtle with the use of a rubber boat. The turtle was carefully brought to shore, cleaned of barnacles, and kept hydrated to minimize stress.

This successful rescue underscores the importance of vigilance, inter-agency coordination, and a shared commitment to the protection and conservation of endangered marine wildlife.
